The Winter Solstice Festival

Happy Winter Solstice!

The Winter Solstice festival (Dong Zhi festival) is one of the most important festivals celebrated by Chinese and other East Asians. The Dong Zhi festival is also a time for the family to get together on the 22^nd of December.

During these festival family get together to make and eat tang yuan or balls of glutinous rice, which symbolize reunion. The pink and white tang yuan is symbolized family unity and prosperity. The Dong Zhi festival is also a reminder that we are now a year older and should behave better in the coming year.

Tang yuan are made of glutinous rice flour and sometimes brightly colored, and usually colored in pink. The flour balls (tang yuan) may be plain or stuffed, and normally stuffed with brown sugar. They are cooked in a sweet soup with both the ball and the soup served in one bowl.

Beware of the top five mistakes that job applicants make when they design their CVs.

The one thing common to most job applications is the curriculum vitae (CV) or resume. This two to three page document is expected to contain the applicant’s employment history, special achievements and relevant personal details. Unfortunately, many applicants fail to craft their CVs properly and end up failing to snag a job interview. Here are the top five mistakes that job applicants make when they design their CVs:

1. Too fanciful

Many job applicants think that the CV is an invitation card or a fashion art piece. They put in fanciful fonts, insert little shapes and pictures, and even change the font sizes, all the time thinking that this demonstrates creativity on their part. However, it is important to remember that the CV is actually a formal document for your future employer’s consideration. It may not sit very well with an executive recruiter who is short of time and just wants simple facts. Besides that, an overly fanciful CV may also tell the recruiter that the applicant is not professional and is not serious about the job.

2. Too long-winded

Some job applicants have significant job experiences. When they write their CVs, they list all their previous positions and make a long list of the responsibilities that they held in each position. This makes their CV long and boring, especially for the recruiter who has to read through hundreds of CVs. Besides, over-emphasizing your job responsibilities may also make you seem like a show-off.

3. Too personal

Some job applicants think that the more personal details they give, the more accessible they will appear to the recruiter. They put in details such as their NRIC number and all their contact number. Some of these details are not even useful when the recruiter assesses the candidates’ suitability for the job. Another problem is that the applicant’s privacy may be compromised if overly private information like the NRIC number is available to many companies at a time.

4. No contact details

There are job applicants who prepare well-written CVs with most of the important details such as, employment history, references and education history, and everything except their contact information. Imagine an employer looking through such a CV. He/she is impressed by the candidate’s accomplishments and experience. He/she is about to ring the candidate’s up for an interview. And lo and behold, there is no contact number on the document. And there is nothing on the cover letter either. Even with the best intentions, the recruiter will never be able to meet this candidate.

5. Not job-specific

The average job-seeker submits his/her CV to more than one company, by using the same document for all his/her job applications. In this cookie-cutter CV, the candidate tends to list all his/her skills and experience. But this is useless to the employer if he/she is looking for a candidate who can fulfill specific job requirements, but all the skills listed in the CV are not relevant to the job. This is very important point that applicants have to remember. Design a CV for each job, tailoring the information to meet its specific requirements.

Important tips to remember, writing a CV is not a walk in a park, so don’t just list all the information without a thought. Always make sure your CV has enough relevant details to interest the hiring manager without overwhelming the hiring manager. Moreover, make sure there are no spelling and vocabulary errors that may compromise your chances of getting a job interview. In additional, when you are crafting your CV or updating it, bear these points in mind for a better chance at impressing prospective employers.

Redang trip again

Year 2004

Redang trip again... still remember, my first first time visit Redang was in year 2004 with my high school friend and we stay in Perhentian island, but we do visit Redang and Lang Tengah island, really unforgettable snorkeling trip. I saw different kind of marine fish, I saw nemo, big turtle at Blue Coral, baby shark at Redang and big shark at Perhentian shark-point wo... fantastic snorkeling trip... really addicted on it. But during meal time... oh no trouble... it’s not included meal... oh... god...

Year 2006

My second time was in year 2006 with my uncle, cousin and friend. We stay in Redang Beach Resort, awesome resort and friendly staff. The 3 day 2 nights snorkeling package was included meal as well. 4 meals per day wo... breakfast, lunch, tea-break and buffer or bbq dinner, and RBR do have open air disco too... not bad loz... but just a 3 day 2 nights trip is not enough at all.

Year 2009

Redang trip again... with my uncle, aunty, cousin sister and cousin brother, in May 2009, 4 day 3 nights at Redang Beach Resort, still the same... Redang scenery, entertainment and staff are awesome but not snorkeling trip.... ar.... why... I should try out scuba diving, wasted the opportunity ar..... maybe, next time. Next time I should try out scuba diving....

Salsa

Basic Movements

The basic step of all styles of salsa involves 3 weight changes (or steps) in each 4 beat measure. The beat without a weight change might contain a tap, kick, or pause. One of the steps is a "break step" a little bit longer than the other two. Different styles of Salsa are often differentiated by the direction and timing of the break step ("on 1" or "on 2" for example). After 6 weight changes in 8 beats, the basic step cycle is complete. While dancing, the basic step can be modified significantly as part of the improvisation and styling’s of the dancers.

As a salsa dancer changes weight the upper body remains level and nearly unaffected by the weight changes. Caught in the middle are the hips which end up moving quite a bit--the famous "Cuban hip movement."

The arms are used to communicate the lead in either open or closed position. In open position the two dancers hold one or both hands, especially for moves that involve turns, or putting arms behind the back, or moving around each other. In closed position, the leader puts the right hand on the follower's back, while the follower puts the left hand on the leader's shoulder.

In some styles, the dancers remain in a slot (switching places), while in others the dancers circle around each other.

How to clean up your house

It’s the season to spring-clean your house, for the Chinese New Year.

Get rid of clutter first. Why clean something, or clean around something, that will only be thrown out sooner rather that later?

Clean from top to bottom. Don’t get your floor all nice and shiny only to realize that your ceiling fan hasn’t been dusted yet, and all that dirt is going to end up back on the floor.

If your place is generally quite clean, a light dusting and some sweeping should suffice.

If you have months of grime to get through with soap and detergent, dust well before wet-wiping or rinsing, to avoid smearing black and grey stains and dripping filthy water everywhere.

If you must leave things very late, just clean the parts of the home that guests will see, like your living room and bathroom.

Heave all the rest of the junk into your own storeroom or bedroom.

Don’t forget the exterior, spruce up your front door, grille gate and walls wit a good wash or even a new coat of paint.

If you have a garden, trim and tidy it.

Give the driveway a scrub too.

Badminton

Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents' half of the court. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the ground, and the shuttlecock may only be struck once by each side before it passes over the net.

The shuttlecock or shuttle is a feathered projectile whose unique aerodynamic properties cause it to fly differently from the balls used in most racquet sports; in particular, the feathers create much higher drag, causing the shuttlecock to decelerate more rapidly than a ball. Shuttlecocks have a much higher top speed, when compared to other racquet sports. Because shuttlecock flight is affected by wind, competitive badminton is best played indoors. Badminton is also played outdoors as a casual recreational activity, often as a garden or beach game.

Badminton is one of my childhood activities. When I was in primary school, I always play badminton with my brothers, cousins, neighbor, classmate and friends. When come to secondary school, I seldom play badminton, because other than badminton, there are many other sport activities, such as, netball, volleyball, bowling and etc. When come to college life, i totally didn’t touch my badminton racquet at all. Recently, I touched my badminton racquet, my friends and I planned to play badminton once a week. The purposes of playing badminton are for fitness, keep-fit and as an activity game.
